Back in the mid-1800s, a couple named Anna and Melville Bissell owned a small crockery shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Anna was frustrated cleaning up sawdust after a hard days workd, and noticed the stubborn particles from the sawdust kept getting stuck and pressed down in the carpet. Sweeping them was basically useless and cleaing up the sawdust became more of a chore than needed after a hard days work.
How the Bissell Carpet Shampooer came about
Anna finally presented this problem to her husand who sat down to design and construct the "carpet sweeper" in the hopes of curing this problem and making life a bit easier at the end of a long day for cleaning up sawdust.
Melville's ingenious carpet sweeper design was an absolute success, and back in those day's, word spread like wildfire and Mr Bissell's carpet sweeper became a phenomina. Soon people started to ask where they can get a carpet sweeper for thier own homes.
The BISSELL Carpet Sweeper was then patented in 1876, and in then in 1883 the first BISSELL manufacturing plant was built in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Melvilles untimely death in 1889 lead Anna Bissell to step in and confidently control the company and she went on to become the first female corporate CEO in the United States.
Anna was very aggressive and with her innovative management, the BISSELL company soon went to other continents and around the world.
As times changed, BISSELL stayed the course and recently acquired the Woolite® Carpet and Upholstery business. Woolite has world renown carpet cleaning products in which BISSELL now runs.
Today BISSELL has everything you need to take care of floors and carpets and is one of the few American Companies that started over 100 years ago left.
BISSELL's tag line ..WE MEAN CLEAN has been a catalyst in the company and they still mean it today!
